Great Grandmother’s Walk

A little girl, A little prayer, A dark road and a mighty God!

If you believe in The Bible you already believe in supernatural things.

As I have shared, I grew up in a faith-based family. We are not perfect by any means but primarily have a deep rooted faith in God. How can we not when it was not uncommon to hear stories like the one I am about to share?

I grew up hearing “God Stories” on a regular basis. It was as common as talking about what we had for dinner or what we were going to do the next day. We would be talking about daily life, family issues, or an upcoming event and dropped right in the middle of it was a “supernatural gem”. It was normal.

When I was very young, I remember my great grandmother sharing one of these stories with me. It was about when she was a little girl. If memory serves me correct, she was under 10 years old.

One evening she was walking home alone. She had waited so long to begin her journey home that it had gotten dark. She shared that the road home was long and rural. She could look in front of her and barley make out the very long path home. To top it off the road home was lined with trees on both sides which added an additional eerie feel. She became more and more overwhelmed with fear and as she walked, ….she prayed..

She prayed a simple prayer of faith that night, for God to just get her home safely. I am sure God exceeded her expectations.

As she was praying, she began to hear the most beautiful singing and music. It was like nothing she had ever heard. It was powerful, and it was glorious!

It was heavenly.

So utterly stunned, she looked around to see where it was coming from and as she looked up, she saw the most unbelievable, incredible, beautiful sight. Angels!  There were many as they lined her entire walking path home. They were lined up on both sides of the road, near the trees. Mighty, beautiful escorts home.

The angelic music continued as she walked through the angels guarding her path. Some had instruments, some not. Majestic! She talked of an incredible awe and peace that came over her that night as she walked home with angels accompanying her. Spending time with her all the way home. There are no words to describe her experience.

God heard her prayers that night and opened the windows of heaven to let a scared little girl see into the supernatural heavenly’s. Oh, the power of prayer!

Decades and decades later, my great grandmother would often refer to this story. She could hardly find the words at times to describe how powerful and beautiful the music was. It was from another place.  She knew there were really no words to give us an understanding but she tried. I saw the confidence and surety in her words and expression, no doubt this event had tremendous impact on her entire life. Can you imagine seeing such things in general, but particularly so young in life?  What a different outlook we would have! To know this life is temporal, and that such a power lies beyond that which we can see.  This is an unspeakable tremendous gift. God showed her at such an early age, he heard her, he knows her, and he cares for her. He showed up in her life big time! What wisdom and comfort to be bestowed on a young girl.

He is powerful and He is mighty! He commands the angels!

She passed away in her 80’s but lived her entire life with such a deep assurance of God’s love, protection and faithfulness. This is her legacy.

We might not all get the opportunity in our lives to be escorted home by a musical band of angels. Singing and comforting us but we can rest assured that God hears our simple prayers as much as he heard my grandmother’s on that dark night. He IS there, whether we see Him or not.

It was just a whisper of a prayer by a little girl on a lonely dark road and the God of the universe responded. Just as he will respond to us today.

The Anchor Holds…… thank you great grandma for your legacy of faith…..
